This video is about how to find free or low-cost activities that are offered by the city of Toronto. You may be able to use search steps in other (Canadian) cities.

Of course, many different places have classes (we call them “programs”) or events for families and children, but the city of Toronto is one of the largest organizations doing such work, and they try to make these services affordable and for as many people as possible.

We need to know how to find these programs. It is not easy because there are thousands of programs and over a hundred locations.

The city of Toronto has over a hundred community centres, which are usually large, nice and bright buildings for free use by everyone in the , no matter rich or poor, young or old.

You can find these locations on Google Maps by typing “community centres near me”

Let’s try it. For example, if I live somewhere around Dufferin & Lawrence in Toronto, these are the .

I can see these red symbols with community centre names, but it does not give a link to a website for more information, so I cannot see many important details about each center just from my Google Maps search.

Like, is there a swimming pool? What time is it open today? Do they have swimming classes? Why is that? Because most of these centres are part of the City of Toronto, Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation services (Parks & Rec for short). So all info about them will be on one website.

So now that you found a few community centres that are close to you on Google Maps, let’s find out more about each place. You can now copy the name and Google it. Or you can just go to the place and find out more about it right there.

I am copying this name – Glen Long Community Center – you can see, it is not very clear on Google Maps, but you can see it after you check out this red symbol. I know I need to look for it, so when you look at your area, make sure you do not miss anything important, anything good. So if I google Glen Long Community Centre, I get to this little page about this place with the exact address, district, and major intersection (Lawrence & Dufferin).

This sentence is important – Check the Drop-In programs tab for hours for the outdoor pool (summer) or the outdoor rink (winter). It tells you where to find details about a swimming pool or a skating rink. Because these hours are for the building in general, but such places as swimming pools will have a different .

If you do not want to register for a class, but just want to come in for a swim on a hot summer day, you would need to check the Drop-in schedule.

So we need to scroll down, click on Drop-in, Swimming, and there is the schedule for this week.

As you can see, the outdoor swimming pool is open to everyone at pretty much the same time every day this week, noon to 7:25, but on Sat & Sun, it starts a bit later, at 1 pm.
